Internationally renowned for its many historic buildings and shrines. Ceramics fairs, art galleries, and rivers are plentiful.
Situated in the center of Honshu (the main island of Japan), Tochigi is surrounded by mountains and hills in the east, west and north, and the Kanto Plains spread to the south. There are the Nasu, Takahara and Nikko volcanic clusters within the prefecture with a number of hot spring resorts scattered in and around them.

Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine / Tochigi
A World Cultural Heritage Site
.Toshogu Shrine is where the famous Shogun of the Edo Period in the 17th century, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was worshiped after his death. It became as luxurious and elaborate as it looks today when the grandson of Ieyasu, the third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, reconstructed it.

Nasu-onsen-kyo Hot Spring Village in Tochigi
It is believed that a deer was witnessed healing its wounds in this hot spring about 1400 years ago. Seven hot springs are spotted on the slope of Nasu-dake Valley. Its main hot spring, Nasu-Yumoto-onsen, includes a historical spot called "Sessho-seki," a stone that is believed to be the transformation.

Yayoi Festival
April 16 th & 17th in Tochigi
This festival signals the arrival of spring at Nikko, which has temples and shrines registered as World Heritage sites.The main attraction takes place on the 17th: a parade of 12 beautifully adorned floats called hana-yatai from each town.

Grand Festival of Spring,Nikko
May 17th & 18th in Tochigi
The highlight of this festival is called Hyakumono-Zoroe Sennin Gyoretsu of some 1,000 men dressed as samurai warriors on the 18th. Nikko,which is registered as a World Heritage Site, is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo.

Shuki Taisei Grand Autumn Festival
October 17th in Tochigi
This procession, consisting of one mikoshi (a portable shrine) and a train of about 800 people, is slightly smaller in scale than that of the Spring Festival. Led by the portable shrine, the samurai procession, made up of cavalry, warriors carrying guns.

Mashiko ware in Tochigi
Mashiko-yaki ware is a type of earthenware produced in Mashiko-machi, Tochigi Prefecture, and is said to have begun as a sideline to farming when clay suitable for pottery was discovered in the area. Initially Mashiko ware consisted mainly of household utensils such as jars for storing food and pestles for use in food preparation.
