Situated next to the western part of Tokyo and the southeast of central Japan, Yamanashi is encircled by the mountains and mountain ranges designated as national and quasi-national parks, such as Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, Yatsugatake-Chushin Quasi-National Park, and the South Japan Alps National Park. It is a prefecture where nature abounds with varying spectacular views of lakes and valleys.

Fuji-Goko in Yamanashi
Fuji-Goko is a collective term for the five lakes along the northern foot of Mt. Fuji. The lakes are Lake Yamada, Lake Kawaguchi, Like Sai, Lake Shoji, Lake Motosu. The largest is Lake Yamanaka, the smallest is the Lake Shoji, the one with the highest surface altitude is Lake Yamanaka, and the deepest one is Lake Motosu.

Crystals were discovered in Yamanashi about 1,000 years ago and since then have been highly prized for decorative purposes. Initially the rough stones were displayed as room ornaments, but in around the 18th century emery powder was used to polish the crystals and a crystal ware industry was born.
